The School of Chemical Engineering and Light Industry has a history of over five decades. The School consists of 3 departments: Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Food and Biological Engineering, and in addition a laboratory center. The School has 5 undergraduate programs, 6 master's degree programs, 5 doctoral degree programs, 1 station of Chemical Engineering for postdoctoral research and 1 master's degree program on engineering. The Department of Chemical Engineering has been selected as a key participant in the Guangdong '211 project'. The School has the authority to award the title Professor of Chemical Engineering. The School also has 1 provincial key discipline (Applied Chemistry), 1 key lab designated by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province (Clean Chemical Technology), 1 provincial experimental teaching demonstration center (Basic Chemistry and Chemical Engineering), and 1 national characteristic specialty (Chemical Engineering and Technology).
The School has some experts and teachers who enjoy a national or provincial reputation, including 12 members of the 'thousand, hundred, ten' talent project of Guangdong province, 2 teachers enjoying special government allowance, 1 national outstanding teacher and 4 provincial outstanding teachers. At present, the School has 3,490 students, including 3,244 undergraduate students, 350 master students and 36 doctoral graduate students. The School's commitment to undergraduate education and its reform has led to a host of scientific breakthroughs and honors, including 2 national excellent teaching awards and awards from both the state and the province for a dozen CAI courseware developments. The School has forged educational and research collaborations with companies and educational organizations, and has established workplace bases in several cities to provide opportunities for students to participate in real-world R&D projects. This has reaped fruitful results. Students have won a number of national and provincial awards in a series of university student competitions. The employment rate of the School's graduates each year has always been higher than 97%.
The School pays great attention to scientific research which serves the local economic development. The School has laboratories furnished with advanced equipment and facilities, which take up a total area more than 12,000 square meters. The School has developed unique strength in the areas of functional polymer materials, functional fine chemicals, petrochemical industry, and biomedicine. In recent years, the School has undertaken about 120 important R&D projects supported by national and provincial Natural Science Funds and other important sources. These projects have resulted in many research achievements, resulting in 12 national and provincial science and technology advanced awards. The School publishes a large number of papers, and has been awarded an increasing number of patents.
