I. Introduction to the Degree and Graduate Education of Guangdong University of Technology

The degree and graduate education in Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT) has developed for nearly thirty years. In 1986, GDUT was authorized to award the Master's Degree. In 1987, the first graduate students were admitted by GDUT. At present, GDUT has five first-grade doctoral programs, 27 second-grade doctoral programs, 20 first-grade master's programs and 88 second-grade master's programs (including MBA), Master of Engineering (in 17 fields), Master of Business Administration, Master of Engineering Management, Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc) and Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI), and more than 7,500 postgraduates are studying here right now. GDUT boasts of 3 top key first-level disciplines, 7 key first-level disciplines and 5 key second-level disciplines in Guangdong Province. In 2015, GDUT, as a whole, entered the Constructed High-level University Program in Guangdong Province. Now, the Engineering of GDUT is listed in ESI world’s top 0.5% ranking and Material Discipline is listed in ESI world’s top 1% ranking. In 2017, GDUT is listed in the Top 100 Most Innovative Universities in Mainland China. GDUT insists on closely integrating scientific research with the needs of Guangdong's economic and social development, following the road of Integrating Production-Learning-Research, and enjoys a number of platforms for scientific research and collaborative innovation, such as National & Local Joint Engineering Laboratory, etc. Up to now, GDUT has set up a cluster of 124 Joint Education Bases for Graduates at the national, provincial and university levels, including 2 National Exemplary Joint Education Bases for engineering degree graduates (surpassing most 985-Prdoject Colleges and Universities, ranking the first in Guangdong Province) and 34 Provincial Exemplary Jointly Education Bases for graduates. GDUT has educated and supplied a large number of high-quality talents for the economic development in Guangdong Province and China.

GDUT gives full play to postgraduate education as an important supportive role in building a High-level University. Around the world's frontier of new technology development, GDUT aims to meet the needs of China's social and economic development and the industrial restructuring and upgrading in Guangdong Province, and to educate innovative graduates at a higher level. Our general path for degree and graduate education development is that it is "led by the disciplines, supported by platforms, driven by innovation, featured by development". With the education concept of "the high starting point, the solid foundation, the strong ability, emphasizing innovation and pursuing excellence", GDUT sets up a multimode education system for knowledge-driven innovative talents and skill-based innovative talents.

GDUT attaches great importance to the team of graduate supervisors and introduces more than 100 distinguished professors from the Hundred Talents Program. The team of professors is constantly improving. There are 125 PhD supervisors and nearly 1,000 supervisors for master students, among whom there are 7 "Cheung Kong Scholars", 9 national "Distinguished Young Scholars" and 15 professors from the national "Thousand Talents Program". At the same time, we also have employed 1 academician from the French Academy of Sciences and 2 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and have set up eight innovation teams at the provincial level.

GDUT always places the quality of graduates at the center of the graduate education. First, as for the different development goals and positioning of various types of postgraduates, GDUT implements the classification management, and develop different education programs and quality assurance systems accordingly. Second, GDUT emphasizes the education of top-notch innovative talents, as well as the practical ability of graduate students. We make great efforts to improve the student sources and assign outstanding supervisors for students with excellent educational background. Those excellent students will be sent to high-level innovation teams and bases. This is our new mechanism to make top-notch innovative talents out of graduate students. On the other hand, we strive to strengthen the joint education exemplary bases for postgraduates, to achieve the scale leading effect, to promote the deep integration of industry, education and research, and to explore the comprehensive modes of professional degree postgraduate education. Third, we have developed a dual monitoring system of degree authorization and graduate education. Taking the evaluation of degree programs and dynamic adjustment as the starting point, and through the improvement of dissertation review and defense procedures and systems, we motivate the degree programs to develop consciously. The Degree Office of the State Council has inspected the doctoral dissertations randomly and all the chosen dissertations were qualified in the past three years. All the chosen dissertations from our master's degree candidates have been qualified by the Degree Office of Guangdong Province for two consecutive years.

GDUT places emphasis on strengthening cooperation and exchanges with foreign countries and is committed to cultivating innovative talents with international perspectives. Many overseas joint postgraduate education bases are set up based on the overseas high-level laboratories, with which we have started long-term and stable scientific research cooperation and various international joint education programs are established with a number of foreign (overseas) universities. While making active use of the Scholarship Fund and Guangzhou City Elites Program, we also provide 100,000 Yuan / year subsidies for top-notch innovative postgraduates to study and research at overseas high-level universities in the form of the joint education programs, collaborative research, academic exchanges, etc. And, on the other hand, we promote the joint development of "Double Master's Degree" programs with overseas excellent universities. Each year, hundreds of postgraduates are sent to foreign universities for research and exchange.

Based on a number of collaborative innovation platforms, which are set up in accordance with the trinity model of "discipline development, talents education, scientific research", we have initially developed the innovation and entrepreneurship education system for postgraduates. Three extensions are specially emphasized: up extension to gather international high-end academic resources, to attract international high-level talents, and to promote the international joint education programs for postgraduates; down extension to meet the industry restructuring and upgrading needs and to develop the exemplary joint education bases for postgraduates serve the economic and social development in Guangdong; inward extension to activate multidisciplinary and innovative resources in the university to serve postgraduates, with particular emphasis on the innovative and practical abilities. In 2015, in the fourteenth "Challenge Cup" competition, our postgraduate teams were respectively awarded one grand prize and one second prize at the national level. In 2014, two entrepreneurship projects of postgraduates won the awards of Outstanding Entrepreneurship Projects of College Students in Guangdong Province. The Grand Prize team members of the Challenge Cup were pictured on the cover of "Chinese graduate" in the third issue of 2016.

With the continuous optimization of discipline structure and steady improvement of postgraduate education quality, GDUT has adapted to the social demand of high-end R & D talents for industrial restructuring and upgrading. Graduate students are widely acclaimed by employers, the employment rate has maintained at least 99% for many years, and the quality of employment has also been steadily improving. Every year, more than 70% of the students come from higher education institutions, which are not located in Guangdong Province. After graduation, more than 80% of them are employed in Guangdong Province, so we offer a large number of urgently needed technical talents to Guangdong Province.
